Common Uses of F1 - F12 keys in Windows

For those of you that have been using windows for quite some time will agree that typing and being able to use windows shortcuts keys can be very beneficial.This is so because we can get our work done faster.In this post i will explain the uses of the F1-F12 keys that are located on our computer keyboard.These keys can also be used in conjunctions with CTRL,SHIFT and ALT keys.

F1 Key:
  • The F1 key is used exclusively on windows system as the key that will bring up a help menu or window.
  • If you press the windows key and the F1 key you will see windows Help and Support window pop up.
  • On some computers pressing the F1 key before the computer boots up will take you straight to the BIOS.(Basic input output system).
F2 Key
  • Highlighting a file or folder and then pressing F2 allows the file or folder to be renamed easily.
  • Pressing Ctrl + F2 gives you a preview of a microsoft word document.
  • On some computers pressing the F2 key before the computer boots up will take you straight to the BIOS (Basic input output system).
F3 Key
  • Pressing Window Key + F3 brings up windows Advance search window.
  • Pressing SHIft + F3 allows you to make changes in Microsoft word,content is changed from upper case to lower case or capital letters at the start of each one word.
F4 Key
  • Pressing ALT + F4 closes the current window that you have open.
  • Pressing F4 while within Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer brings up the location bar.
F5 Key
  • Pressing F5 will refresh or reload a page.
  • It opens a slide show in Powerpoint
F6 Key
  • Pressing CTRL + SHIFT + F6 will open another document in microsoft word.
  • Pressing F6 key will lower the volume on some laptop computers.
F7 Key
  • Pressing F7 key will check the spelling and grammar in microsoft programs e.g. (word,excel,outlook).
  • SHIFT + F7 runs a Thesaurus check on a highlighted word that you choose.
F8 Key
  • Pressing F8 while the computer is booting up will take you to windows boot menu screen(you will see a black screen with options such as safe mode,safe mode with networking etc)
F9 Key
  • Pressing F9 on the keyboard will lower the brightness of  your screen for some laptops.
  • It is used for sending and receiving emails in outlook.
  • Used to refresh a page for some computers.
F10 Key
  • Pressing the F10 button on the keyboard in microsoft windows brings up the menu bar of an open application.
  • SHIFT + F10 is the same as right clicking on an icon or file that has been highlighted.
F11 Key
  • Pressing the F11 key allows you to enter and exit full screen mode for almost all of the newer browsers.
  • Pressing Ctrl + F11 while the xomputer is booting up will give you access to the hidden partition on most of Dell computers.
F12 Key
  • Pressing F12  will bring up the save as window in microsoft word.
  • Pressing Ctrl + F12  will open a document in microsoft word.
  • Pressing SHIFT + F12 saves a document in microsoft word.(similiar tp CTRL+ S)
