5 easy steps to make your pc faster

Ok, so you bought a computer  and it is working  very fast and doing everything that you command it to do.Suddenly after a couple of months it start to behave very sluggish  and starts to take a long time to boot up and whenever you try to save a document  it  takes forever  to save.Well don`t worry this is a common symptom  that most new computer owners will experience after a  couple months or more of  purchasing their computer depending on how they use their  pc to get work done.Note however  a new pc as well as a old pc will have performance issues.Below I will outline some easy to do steps to increase the speed and  performance of your computer.
Note to perform certain troubleshooting tasks you need to log into the machine as an administrator.

Step 1

First and foremost you would want to know if your  computer is infected with any virus or spyware or other malicious programs that may put your data at risk of being stolen or damaged beyond repair.Viruses, spyware, malware, worms ,etc  all tend to slow your system down  significantly so to prevent such from happening you must install an good antivirus and update the definition data base in order to keep your system secure 24/7.This will help check for and remove viruses from  your system.Here is a list of a few good anti-virus programs that are free and they take up very little computer  resources :

1. Avira
2. Avg
3. Kaspersky

Now after  you would have downloaded one of the anti-virus from above you will  need  to install the antivirus, update the definition database, reboot and then run a complete scan of the entire system.

Installing the Anti-Virus (AVG)

Click Accept

2. Select quick install and click next

3. Installation Progress

4. Complete the installation and click finish

Now with AVG installed you should immediately do a scan of your system  by clicking on the left screen where there is the scan now button as shown below.

Step 2

Close all  unnecessary programs that are running in the background.

Whenever you install applications such as yahoo messenger, adobe reader, etc  onto your computer .The next time you turn on your system, these programs will automatically load with windows as a default.This can alone can  take up a lot of your computer memory as they will be loaded and run in real time, furthermore slowing down your system considerably.Thanks to windows there is a tool called “MSCONFIG” and it is a Microsoft system configuaration utility. The main function of MSConfig is to temporarily disable or re-enable software, device drivers or Windows services that run during startup process to help user decide the cause of problem.What we should do now we know what is Msconfig?

Click start ->Run

Type Msconfig in the box

When  the Msconfig  utility box comes up click the startup tab and uncheck all the programs like yahoo messenger, google update services, msnlive, programs that you don`t want to be loaded as windows is loaded.After you would have done that click apply and restart your system.

Step 3

Defragment  your  harddrive.

To defrag your hardrive here is what you do, for users running windows xp you click start run, then in the search box you type “ dfrg.msc”.When the utility comes up click on the disk you want to defrag  and you are done. For users running windows 7 type in “dfrgui” , when disk defragmenter comes up click defragment  now.

Here is what they should look like:

Windows Xp

Windows 7

Step  4

Change the size of the page file.

The page file(pagefile.sys)  is a hidden file on your computer`s  hard disk that windows uses as it were random access  memory (RAM).Note that  pagefile and physical memory make up virtual memory  and it is stored on the boot partition (the partition that stores the operating system) and it is 1.5 times the RAM in size.With the pagefile on the boot partition  windows  would now have to provide reading and writing  requests on the system folder and the pagefile .This can significantly slow down I/O requests  and you can boost performance by increasing the size of the page file.

Here is how you change the size of the page file:

Windows xp
 1. Click on start-> right click my computer icon-> properties
 2. Click advanced tab->performance  -> settings->advanced tab
 3. Under  the virtual memory ->click change
 4. After  choose the C: drive
 5. Click custom size->make change->set->ok

Windows  7
1. Click start ->control panel->system and maintenance->system
2. On the left pane click->advanced setting settings
3. On Advanced tab and under virtual memory  click change
4. Under Drive( volume label) click  the drive that contains the paging file
5. Click custom size, enter  the size and then click set and  ok.

Step 5

Repairing  Disk Errors.

In addition to running Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

How do you run the Error checking utility:
Close all open files.
  1. Click Start, and then click Computer.
  2. In the Computer window (My Computer in Windows XP), right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
  4. Click the Check Now button.
  5. In the Check Disk dialog box (called Error-checking in Windows 7), select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
